About the project:
As of right now, there are over 10.7 million out-of-school youth in the Philippines, simply because their families cannot afford to pay for their education. I find this educational disparity very unjust and crucial to address---I believe that all children in the Philippines deserve the same educational rights that we experience in Canada. That is why through opening a new Philippine chapter for our student-led, non-profit organization "We Are Bibli", we hope to address this educational issue. My team hopes to provide free L-pads (children's learning pads)---uploaded with our 30+ personally written children's books and personally-coded games---to impoverished communities in the Philippines.
Last year, our team was able to raise $600 and send 20 L-pads to Kenyan children (we collaborated with another non-profit organization called L-Pad Africa). This year, in addition to Kenya, WeAreBibli plans to send L-pads to the Philippines to help under-resourced Filipino children as well, in hopes of bridging educational gaps through the power of storytelling and L-pad technologies.
How the process of the project is going to look like:
My team and I will buy and refine the L-pads in Calgary, Alberta. By "refining", I mean to preload our self-written children's books (written by WeAreBibli's 200+ volunteers across Canada) and self-programmed games (coded by WeAreBibli's executive team) into the L-pads in Calgary. We will then ship them over to the Philippines and collaborate with the Philippine student-led, non-profit organization "Lidha's Cradle" to distribute the L-pads to local communities in the Philippines.
Just to clarify, only another WeAreBibli executive and I are involved in sending L-pads to the Philippines. In other words, WeAreBibli is an organization with executives located all across Canada, but the Philippines chapter is founded solely by us Calgarian executives.
How you will use the money:
We will use the grant to buy L-pads and solar chargers for the learning-pads to send to Filipino youth. Under-resourced children in the Philippines may not have access to electricity, so this is why we have considered to buy solar chargers as well.
Side note: The images that I upload with this application form are images of both the L-pads and printed books that WeAreBibli was able to send to children in Kenya (this project was a collaboration between WeAreBibli and L-pad Africa).
About me:
I'm a Gr.12 student at Sir Winston Churchill High School in Calgary. I'm a competitive dancer, pianist, and retired national rhythmic gymnast. I love to attend my school sports teams! I also host a school Astrophysics club, founded a school Rhythmic Gymnastics club (& becoming a Special Olympics assistant coach), lead the NPO LinkCC, teach Shakespeare to my community, host math contests with the NPO Chinook Curiosity Central, and work on sending L-pads to African & the Philippines.
Do you have any details about your budget? If your project will be more than $1000, is there a specific awesome part of your project that $1000 will fund?
I want to fundraise for 3000 L-pads and solar chargers, which in total, sums up to $26 000.
